We remember International Holocaust Remembrance Day

International Holocaust Remembrance Day was declared by the UN General Assembly on 1. November 2005. The date to commemorate the millions is 27. January. It was on that day in 1945 that the Red Army liberated the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp. By the time the troops entered it, they found 7,600 prisoners who had survived the horrors of the concentration camp.

 

Trenčín will be the European Capital of Culture in 2026

The synagogue is one of the key partners of a project. The valuable victory of Trenčín comes at a time when culture is going through an extremely difficult period.

 

The head of the international jury, Paulina Florjanowicz, announced the decision on Friday, 10. December, shortly after 4 p.m. The city of Trenčín received the title of European Capital of Culture 2026. This happened after almost two years of intensive training and two selection rounds. Apart from Trenčín, Nitra and Žilina also competed in the final eight places.

 

The Trenčín Synagogue is temporarily green, so we support the conference about climate change

The Presidential Palace, Comenius University, Bojnice Castle, but also the synagogue in Trenčín have temporarily changed the color of their lighting. In this way, buildings supported the UN Climate Change Conference, known as COP26, which began in Glasgow on Sunday 31 October. Leaders from around the world, including those from Slovakia, will negotiate ambitious goals to save the planet.

The Trenčín Synagogue experienced a historic moment in 2020 - it was included among the monuments that were supported by EEA Grants and the state budget. However, the funds obtained will not be enough for the complete reconstruction of this more than 100-year-old building. The total amount of eligible costs is one million euros, but thanks to the "Norwegian" project, we can only restore about half of the interior.

A walk through the city brought many visitors to the synagogue

The Trenčín Synagogue reopened to the public during the first weekend of September. The cultural and information center organized a walk through the city, which was full of interesting information. Dozens of visitors learned more not only about the history of the synagogue itself, but also about other places related to the Jewish community in Trenčín.

 

US Ambassador: The highlight of my visit was a meeting in the synagogue

The US Ambassador to Slovakia Bridget A. Brink visited the Trenčín region for the first time. During the past weekend, she visited the cities of Trenčín and Trenčianske Teplice. She also visited the synagogue in Trenčín, which she overlooked in the company of members of the Jewish Community. The history of this unique place, as well as the restoration project, which is gradually beginning, was introduced to the American Ambassador by president of community Oľga Hodálová.
